The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive was adopted to establish a common framework of measures to support the roll-out of publicly accessible alternative fuels infrastructure in the EU. In 2021 the EU launched a proposal to convert the directive – which is not binding on the member states – into a regulation that does entail obligations.
It should support a complete network of recharging and refueling infrastructure allowing seamless travel across the EU, interoperability of infrastructure (in terms of physical connections, communication standards, effective vehicle integration into electricity grids and compliance with electricity market rules), full user information on the availability of charging and refueling points (need for real-time data and information on the availability and maintenance of charging points), and uniform and easy-to-use payment methods.
This shift towards EV will have a direct impact on oil companies. To meet the changing customer behaviour and expectations they will need to adjust their operating and business model. The business is becoming more customer centric and every day we see that through digitalization and the use of apps the relationship is changing between the operator and the end customer. It is crucial to have the necessary services at the station to keep the end customer satisfied and loyal. This not only means physical changes on the forecourt but also collecting data.
Since data is the new petrol or the new gold, oil companies must leverage data to get customer insights such as ‘Who is our ideal customer?’ and ‘Where does the customer spend the most time on the forecourt?’ This will be the main source for creating your business strategy. Investing in infrastructure and technology will be a critical part of that strategy and is the only way to future proof your stations.
The energy transition, changing customer behaviour & expectations, technological changes, … are just a few of the challenges fuel retailers are facing today.
