The non-profit organization Aketi, who focuses entirely on humanitarian and social projects in Aketi (Africa), starts building a new school to give the youngest children the opportunity to go to school and to get the education they are entitled to.
With the international growth of ICASA, we find it important to contribute to the international community as well as to local initiatives. In earlier editions we already talked about our partnership with the non-profit organization Aketi, who focuses entirely on humanitarian and social projects related to the fundamental necessities such as health, education and training of the population in Aketi.
A new school for the young children
Although the current challenging times make the work even more difficult, the non-profit organization continues their humanitarian projects in Aketi. ‘At the specific request of the local population we’ve just started to build a school, 2 classrooms and an office on the left bank of Aketi in Makoko’, Fons Peeters – one of the founders of the organization – explains. ‘The young children cannot go to school because they always have to cross the river, the Itimbri, with a proa. Once this project is finished, they will be able to go to school and to get the education every child should be entitled to.’
Logistical effort
‘But it’s easier said than done. With a lot of logistical effort and perseverance, the cement bags and material were brought from Kisangani to Aketi. In Aketi everything was moved across the river by manpower and carried to the construction site. People are making the building blocks themselves and let them dry in the sun.’
‘A few weeks ago we also collected discarded blackbords in Belgian schools. Together with other useful things they were being shipped from the port of Antwerp to Kinshasa. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and the donations of companies and schools, we are able to further realize our projects and give the people in Aketi the support they need’, Fons concludes.
