P2P connection vs roaming hub - Advantages & disadvantages for the (fuel) retailer

EV charging point

Many fuel retailers are still hesitant to invest in EV charging infrastructure due to the high upfront costs. However, with the increasing demand for electric vehicles and legislation, it is important for fuel retailers to invest in EV charging infrastructure to ensure their stations are future-proof.

Is a peer-to-peer connection sufficient, or do you have to connect to a roaming hub? We list the pros and cons.

Peer-to-peer (P2P): Flexible, customizable & faster

One approach for fuel retailers is to establish a peer-to-peer (P2P) network, where retailers communicate and exchange data directly with each other. This allows for more flexible and customizable data exchange, and eliminates the need for third-party fees. However, negotiating many individual connections can be time-consuming.

Roaming: Unification & interoperability

Alternatively, retailers can use a roaming hub to establish a uniform method of communication with other connected CPOs and eMSPs. This allows for greater compatibility and interoperability, and provides access to a larger customer base. However, roaming hubs charge fees for their services and often offer extra administrative services, which can limit customization and adaptability.

The EV driver

From the perspective of EV drivers, roaming hubs can be beneficial as they provide access to a wider range of charging stations. However, the fees charged by roaming hubs and the lack of customization may be drawbacks. Ultimately, the optimal approach may be a mix of P2P and roaming hub connections.

SaaS cloud platform - CPO

ICASA offers a SaaS cloud platform that enables CPOs to onboard, activate, and manage their chargers in their secured customer environment. From defining tariffs and authorizing charging sessions, to monitoring and billing. Real-time connections allow bi-directional communication, meaning receiving and pushing data from and to the chargers. The ICASA Suite supports various protocols, has integrations with roaming hubs, and offers the ability to integrate with customer enterprise systems.
