Fuel cards for goods and services related to mobility

JUNE 19, 2018
Fuel cards

As a consequence of a European Union directive on payment services – Payment Services Directive (PSD 2) aka Directive (EU) 2015/2366 – in the future it will only be allowed to use fuel cards for goods and services related to mobility.

The implementation of this directive might vary between countries, both timing wise as well as in some specifics.

Fuel card

Mobility related goods & services

It will be possible, as it was before, to pay with fuel cards for all fuels like Diesel, Gasoline, Biofuels, AdBlue (or other similar additives serving for the purpose of fulfilling the EU emission standards), Gas (CNG, LNG), but next to these also items like motorway toll, vignettes, parking, tunnel fees, ferries.. Likewise, purchase of articles, liquid or non-liquid, directly related to the vehicle operation like lubricants, windshield wiper fluid, breaking fluid, tyres, washing and cleaning services, windscreen wiper rubber, vehicle first aid kits, tachograph discs…are also allowed on the fuel cards.

Purchases in the shops no longer allowed with the fuel card

Shop articles – goods for the driver – will no longer be permitted as purchases with a fuel card. This implies that goods not related to vehicle operation but widely available at petrol stations including sandwiches, drinks, fruits, yogurt, cigarettes, groceries … shall not be available for purchase with a fuel card.

When the directive becomes effective depends on the various countries of the European Union.
